Some areas were very dangerous for ships, so lighthouses* were built in these places. At night, people on ships knew they had to be careful when they saw the light on the top of a lighthouse. The people who took care of lighthouses were called lighthouse keepers, and their job was very important. In 1853, a 14-year-old girl named Abbie Burgess moved to an island in Maine with her family. No other people lived on the island, and Abbie's father was the lighthouse keeper. Abbie helped her father in the lighthouse. She learned how to clean the lights in the lighthouse and do many other things. The lights had to shine* brightly until morning. Just before winter in 1856, Abbie's father had to leave the island to buy food. He had to go 25 miles by boat to get to the nearest town. He told Abbie to take care of their family and the lighthouse. After he left, a big storm came, and it was the biggest storm in 100 years. It rained and snowed for four weeks, so Abbie's father could not return to the island. Abbie took care of the lighthouse by herself for one month. Finally, Abbie's father came back. He was very happy because his family was safe. Abbie did a great job. Her work saved many people's lives. Abbie became the assistant* lighthouse keeper in 1862. From: Amy Gordon To: All Customer Service Staff <customerservicestaff@g-kelectronics.com> Date: January 23 Subject: Staff changes <a.gordon@g-kelectronics.com> Dear Customer Service Staff, I hope everyone enjoyed themselves at the company party last Friday. I had a really good time. I think that the Grand Hotel was the perfect place to have it. Don't forget that some of you won prizes in the bingo games that we played. Steve Miller in the sales department says that he has the prizes, so if you won something, go and see him to pick up your prize. I have some other announcements as well today. Six new people will be joining our company next month. They've all recently graduated from college, and two of them will be coming to work with us in the customer service department. We'll have three new co-workers altogether because Kent Gardiner will also be moving to our department at the same time. He has worked in the design department at G&K Electronics for 10 years, so I'm sure that many of you already know him. There are a couple of other staff changes, too. Peter Smith, the manager of the accounting department, will be retiring at the end of next month. Peter has worked at G&K Electronics for over 40 years. There will be a short retirement ceremony for him in Meeting Room A at 5 p.m. on February 28. Also, starting next week, Rachel Martin will take six months off because her baby will be born very soon. Sincerely, Amy Gordon Customer Service Department Manager
