Japan's 2020 buzzwords of the year were announced on Dec. 1. The list was dominated by words and
phrases connected to the coronavirus pandemic.
The top buzzword of the year was Sanmitsu, or the “Three Cs.” It refers to the government's advice
to prevent COVID-19 infections by avoiding closed spaces, crowds and close-contact situations.
The buzzwords are chosen each year by a publisher since 1984.
