O そののちにや、良秀がよち 山崎正和 水の東西 「鹿おどし」が動いているのを見ると、その愛嬌のなかに、なんとなく人生のけだるさのようなものを感じることがある。 かわいらしい竹のシーソーの一端に水受けがついていて、それに筧の水が少しずつたまる。静かに緊張が高まりながら、や がて水受けがいっぱいになると、シーソーはぐらりと傾いて水をこぼす。緊張が一気にとけて水受けが跳ね上がるとき、竹 が石をたたいて、こおんと、くぐもった優しい音をたてるのである。 見ていると、単純な、緩やかなリズムが、無限にいつまでも繰り返される。緊張が高まり、それが一気にほどけ、しかし 何事も起こらない徒労がまた一から始められる。ただ、曇った音響が時を刻んで、庭の静寂と時間の長さをいやがうえにも 引き立てるだけである。水の流れなのか、時の流れなのか、「鹿おどし」は我々に流れるものを感じさせる。それをせきと め、刻むことによって、この仕掛けはかえって流れてやまないものの存在を強調していると言える。 私はこの「おどし」を、ニューヨークの大きな銀行の待合室で見たことがある。日本の古い文化がいろいろと紹介され るなかで、あの素朴な竹の響きが西洋人の心を魅きつけたのかもしれない。だが、ニューヨークの銀行では人々はあまりに 忙しすぎて、一つの音と次の音との長い間隔を聴くゆとりはなさそうであった。それよりも窓の外に噴き上げる華やかな噴 水の方が、ここでは水の芸術として明らかに人々の気持ちをくつろがせていた。 流れる水と、噴き上げる水。 そういえばヨーロッパでもアメリカでも、町の広場にはいたるところにみごとな噴水があった。ちょっと名のある庭園に 行けば、噴水はさまざまな趣向を凝らして風景の中心になっている。有名なローマ郊外のエステ家の別荘など、何百という 噴水の群れが庭をぎっしりと埋めつくしていた。樹木も草花もここではそえものにすぎず、壮大な水の造型が轟きながら林 立しているのに私は息をのんだ。それは揺れ動くバロック彫刻さながらであり、ほとばしるというよりは、音をたてて空間 に静止しているように見えた。 時間的な水と、空間的な水。 そういうことをふと考えさせるほど、日本の伝統のなかに噴水というものは少ない。せせらぎを作り、滝をかけ、池を掘 って水を見ることはあれほど好んだ日本人が、噴水の美だけは近代にいたるまで忘れていた。伝統は恐ろしいもので現代の 都会でも、日本の噴水はやはり西洋のものほど美しくない。そのせいか東京でも大阪でも、町の広場はどことなく間が抜け て、表情に乏しいのである。 西洋の空気は乾いていて、人々が噴き上げる水を求めたということもあるだろう。ローマ以来の水道の技術が、噴水を発 達させるのに有利であったということも考えられる。だが、人工的な滝を作った日本人が、噴水を作らなかった理由は、そ ういう外面的な事情ばかりではなかったように思われる。日本人にとって水は自然に流れる姿が美しいのであり、圧縮した りねじまげたり、粘土のように造型する対象ではなかったのであろう。 言うまでもなく、水にはそれ自体として定まったかたちはない。そうして、かたちがないということについて、おそらく 日本人は西洋人と違った独特の好みを持っていたのである。「行雲流水」という仏教的な言葉があるが、そういう思想はむ しろ思想以前の感性によって裏づけられていた。それは外界に対する受動的な態度というよりは、積極的に、かたちなきも のを恐れない心の現れではなかっただろうか。 見えない水と、目に見える水。 もし、流れを感じることだけが大切なのだとしたら、我々は水を実感するのにもはや水を見る必要さえないと言える。た だ断続する音の響きを聞いて、その間隙に流れるものを間接に心で味わえばよい。そう考えればあの「鹿おどし」は、日本 人が水を鑑賞する行為の極致を現す仕掛けだと言えるかもしれない。
