Augustus Caesar, also known as Octavian until 27B.C, the first Roman emperor, was
born Gaius Octavius in 63B.C. As Julius Caesar's grandnephew and adopted son,Octavian was
made Julius Caesar's legal heir after his assassination in 44B.C. Despite being only 18,0ctavian
decided to quit his studies and return to Rome to receive his inheritance and lead Caesar's
supporters. Tensions existed between himself and Mark Antony over Caesar's inheritance.
However, Octavian formed the Second Triumvirate with Mark Antony and Marcus Aemilius
Lepidus, who was another trusted ally of Caesar's. They wanted to avenge Julius Caesar's
death in a swift and decisive manner. This alliance was formally recognized by the Senate,
unlike Caesar's First Triumvirate.
