In Japan a huge amount of food is discarded every year without being
eaten. The volume of such uneaten food is almost equal to Japan's annual rice
crop. What causes us to throw away such a large quantity of food? Some
analysts point out that it is our food distribution system that causes us to
5 dispose of so
much food. Our system is more strictly regulated than in other
advanced countries. Others argue that our tendency to prefer food with longer
shelf life results in such a situation. Never can we make changes unless we
are determined to change the way we sell, buy, and stock food.
