でいます。 無痛文明が最も進んでいるのは、おそらくアメ リカ合衆国と日本ではないでしょうか。 では、苦しみからどこまでも逃げ続けていく仕組みが社 会の中で発展したとして、それのどこが悪いのか、という 疑問が浮かぶと思います。 文明の進歩とはそういうもので あっただろう。それは文明の輝かしい勝利なのではないか、 何てすばらしいんだ、と。はたして、そうでしょうか。 これは非常に悩ましく難しい問題です。 現代哲学が正面 から立ち向かって、深く掘り下げるべき問題ではないかと 思います。 今体験しているさまざまな苦しみ、 将来ふりか かってくるであろうさまざまな苦しみ、そういうものから、 多くの人々が次々と逃げ続けることができるような仕掛け が張りめぐらされている社会は、いい社会だと思いますか。 皆さん、どうお考えでしょうか。 この問いかけを若い人たちにすると、彼らはイエスとは B なかなか答えずに、考え込みます。 苦しみから次々と逃げ続けることができるのは文明の勝 ることができ、快楽、刺激、安楽さ、快適さ、これらを十 分に経験することができる。するとどうなるか。「気持ち がいいけれどもよろこびがない、刺激が多いけれども満た されない」、という状態になるのではないでしょうか。 こ れが、現代文明の根本問題だと私は思うのです。 私もここまでいろいろ考えてきてわかったのですが、 実 はこれは現代に特有の問題ではないのです。 これは、非常 に古くから哲学や宗教が、それぞれの時代に即して考えて きたことなのです。 ある人が財産を手に入れ、権力を手に入れ、 好きな人を 手に入れ、時間を手に入れ、快楽を手に入れ、刺激を手に 入れ、さあどうなったかというと、その人の人生は不幸に なりました、というお話を我々はたくさん持っています。 どの文化でも持っています。 これは何を意味しているのか。 やはり人類は昔から、こういう問題に直面してきたので す。快楽はあるけれどもよろこびがない、物はあるけれど も充足しないという問題に。ところが、昔の社会では、こ 利だし、それでどこが悪いのかと問われたとき、私はどう 答えるか。そこに何か問題があるとすれば、それは我々か 「よろこび」が失われていくことだ、というのが私の結 論です。 苦しみから次々に逃れていった後に何が残るかというと、~ 快楽と快適さと安楽さが残ります。 社会の中で、人間関係 の中で、人生の中で体験する苦しみからどんどん逃れてい そうしてどうしても逃れられない苦しみがあれば、そ れに目隠しをして見ないことにする。 すると、そういうも のは全部目の前からなくなって、そのあとに何が残るかと いうと、快楽、快適さ、安楽さが残る。 欲しい刺激は手に 入れられる、 楽をしたいときには楽ができる。 こういう状 態になるのです。 もちろん今の段階の文明は、まだそこまで行ってはいま せん。そこを目指して動きはじめたところですから、 まだ 5 そこまで行っていないのですが、もしそこまで行き着いて しまったらどうなるのか。 苦しみからいくらでも逃れ続け ういう状況に陥る人は少数でした。たとえば、権力の頂点 に立って人々から搾取している貴族や王族などの、一握り の人々だけだったでしょう。 すなわち、文明が進歩した結果、昔は一握りの貴族とか 王様だけが陥っていた状況が、 大衆化したと考えられるの です。 無痛化する現代文明とは、昔は一握りの人しか抱え 込むことのなかった富の逆説を、社会全体で抱え込まなけ ればならなくなった文明のことなのです。 出典 『生命学をひらく自分と向きあう「いのち」の思想」 (二〇〇五年刊) 5 175|意見を述べる 無化する社会のゆくえ | 174
