"Why did my grandmother die?"
「どうして僕のおばあさんは死んだの?」
"Why did everyone leave me?" cried a boy of fourteen
「どうしてみんなは僕を置いていったの?」と14歳の少年が泣きました。
"I hate my
father and mother.
「僕はお父さんとお母さんを憎む。」
The sun was bright in the blue sky above him.
太陽は彼の上の青空に輝いていました。
But the boy could not see it because he was blind.
しかしその少年は目が不自由なのでそれを見ることができませんでした。
The boy was born in 1952 in Okinawa.
少年は1952年に沖縄に生まれました。
His father was Mexican-American and his mother is
彼の父はメキシコ系アメリカ人で、母は日本人でした。
Both of them left home when he was a baby.
彼らは2人とも、彼が赤ん坊の時に家を去りました。
So his grandmother took care of him.
だから彼の祖母が彼の世話をしました。

The boy's name was Aragaki Tsutomu.
少年の名前は新垣勉でした。
He liked music very much.
彼は音楽がとても好きでした。
One day, he heard some hymns on the radio.
ある日、彼はラジオで何曲かの賛美歌を聞きました。
He was interested in them.
彼はそれらに興味をもちました。
He wanted to hear some other hymns, and so he
went to a church.
彼は他の賛美歌を聞きたかった、だから彼は教会に行きました。
At the church, he met the minister.
教会で、彼は牧師に会いました。
Tsutomu told him about his life.
勉は彼の人生について話しました。
The minister listened to him quietly.
牧師は静かに話を聞きました。
When Tsutomu stopped talking, he found that the
minister was crying.
勉が話すのを止めた時、彼は牧師が泣いているのに気付きました。
"Oh, he understands me,” Tsutomu thought.
「ああ、彼は僕のことを分かってくれているんだ」と勉思いました。
