leave right away. As time went on, they began to panic.
Suddenly two planes appeared to help the Japanese people. They were from
Turkey. All the Japanese people went on board and quickly left the airport for
Japan. It was just before the deadline.
Why did the Turkish planes come? Why did they save the Japanese people?

In 1890, a ship came to Japan from Turkey. It was on a friendship trip to Japan.
On the way home, it met a strong typhoon off the coast of Wakayama. It crashed
and 587 Turkish people died. The people in a fishing village rescued 69 people. The
villagers didn't have much food because of the typhoon. However, they gave the
Turkish people their last chickens to eat. They also buried the dead.
After a month, the Turkish people left for home on two Japanese ship.

Today, Japan and Turkey share a very strong friendship.
When a big earthquake hit Turkey on August 17, 1999, Japanese people went
there to help. People in Wakayama also send food, medicine, and other necessary
things to help the Turkish people. Then, on March 11, 2011, the Great East Japan
Earthquake happened. This time, Turkish people came to help the Japanese.
If we keep up these efforts, our world will be a better place. A little help for others
goes a long way.
