これは分詞という表現ですね　名詞＋ingで　inｇしている名詞　名詞＋過去分詞で　過去分詞されている名詞です。
satはsitの過去分詞ですね。　もしsatなら　座られているという訳になっちゃいますね　なので　子どもたちの近くに座っているという訳の　sittingになるわけです
