② <It seems that... > that節内の時制が文全体の時制より前のとき、
完了形のto 不定詞を使って書き換える。
<It seems lis said is thought) that...>と
<S seem(s) [be動詞 said be動詞thought] to不定詞>の
書き換えで、that節内の動詞が主節の動詞よりも前のことを表す場合、
to 不定詞は完了形不定詞<to have+過去分詞>になる。
It seems that this father was a teacher. 「彼の父親は教師だったらしい」

<It seems that S+V'… > that節の主語 (S') his father は、
<S+ seem(s) to不定詞…)の文全体の主語になる。
また、 that節の動詞 was は過去形、つまり現在形の seemsよりも
前のことを表すものであるため、不定詞で表す場合には
完了形不定詞 to have been にする。

It was thought that the ship thad reached the port of New York.

was thoughtは過去形 一方 had reached は過去完了なので
to 不定詞で表すには、述語動詞 was thought (過去形)よりも前のことを
