Stars are born under certair conditions, live for a period of time, and eventually die. ③ The life span of a star differ from that of a human, however by billions of years! ④ Modern telescopes have helped astronomers to learn more about stars. No. Date ⑦ Scientists are not sure of the exact process by which a star forms/yl Over the life of a star begins with a gigantic cloud of dust and gas called a *2nebula⑨ time, gravitational forces develop within the cloud, and hydrogen atoms are pulled in 10 toward the center where they fuse into helium atoms, releasing, heat and energy-foWhen the temperature of the nebula_reaches a *3critical level, a new star is formed. W Throughout their lifetimes, stars change in both color and temperature These two characteristics are related The hottest stars are blue and have a surface temperature of approximately: 35,000℃ Other stars vary, from white to yellow to red-orange to red, 15 and they range in temperature from 10,000 to 3,000°C. As stars get older, they lose energy, their temperatures decrease, and eventually they turn red. be sure of ~ exact 「~を確信している。」 「正確な、的確な」 gigantic 「巨大な、激しい」 gravitational 「動の」 「gravity 「動力」) hydrogen atoms) 「水素原子」 releae 「放出する」 temperature 「温度」 nebula 「星雲」 throughout 「~の至る所に、 ~の間じゅう」 lifetime 「生涯」 characteristic 「特有の、特徴的な」 relate 「関連させる」 approximately 「おおよそ」 vary「異なる」 eventually 「結局は、ついに」 = about

No. Date Along with color and temperature, size differs among stars Our own star, the Sun, is a medium-sized star. Although medium-sized stars live for approximately 10 billion years live for "only" a few before they finally lose their energy and cease existence, smaller stars can live up to 100 20 billion years. Very large stars - known as **super-massive stars billion years. S ②0 2A star that is five or more times as massive as the Sun) dies when the gravitational collapse of its core, triggers a massive explosion called a supernova.Medium-sized stars simply cool down and then slowly perish, becoming dense, iron lumps of matter 25 that astronomers, call *6black dwarfs. 22 Super-massive stars, however, have an entirely different fate. After such a star undergoes a supernova explosion, the core becomes so heavy that it finally collapses under its own gravity, creating a black hole:CH: The gravity of a black hole is so tremendous that it acts like a huge vacuum cleaner in space, pulling in everything in 日本獣医生命科学大 387 語] 30 its *7vicinity. a black hole Extract from Timed Readings Plus in Science: Book 8 by Jamestown Education and Glencoe The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. 2003 approximately cease 「おおよそ、約」 「終わる」途絶える」 existence 「存在、生存」 massive 「大きな」 gravitational 「動力の」 collapse 「崩壊」 core 「芯、中心、核」 = about trigger「引き金となる→引き起こす」 explosion perish = die 「死ぬ」 dense 「濃密な」 (density) iron lumps astronomer 「鉄のかたまり」 「天文学者」
