(1). For more than a quarter-century, scientists and the general public have been updating view of the Americas before European contact. For example, they've found that the plains faolo s and the Eastern forests were not a wilderness but a series of gardens. The continents were not vast uninhabited spaces but a busy network of towns and cities. Indigenous people,* we've 05 learned, altered the ecology of the Americas as surely as the European invaders did. Now, there is a comprehensive new study bearing the names of more than 40 researchers. It suggests that marks left by humans can even be seen across one of the most biodiverse* yet unexplored regions in the world, the Amazon rainforest. For more than 8,000 years, people lived in the Amazon and farmed it to make it more o productive. (2) They favored certain trees (over others effectively creating crops that we now call the cocoa bean and the Brazil nut, and eventually domesticated them. While many of the communities managing these plants) died in the Amerindian genocide* 500 years ago, the effects of their work can still be observed in today's Amazon rainforest. From the Diary of Kawamoto Itsuyoshi 河本くんの日記。 紙が手に入りにくい時代だったので、 最後の日記は伝票の裏に書かれています。 10 April 4 (Wednesday), Sunny Today was a happy day for me. From today, I am going to commute to Nichu. I went to Hiroshima on the 6:50 a.m. steam train. Unfortunately, it was delayed. I was worried, "What will happen to me?" When I arrived at Nichu, the ceremony was already going on. After 1 explained my delay, they let me in. I sighed with relief. April 15 (Sunday), Sunny Today is the third Sunday. I went to school and at last we started to study. We had English in the first hour, self-study in the second, history in the third, and math 2 (geometry) in the fourth hour. I studied very hard. April 30 (Monday), Sunny For the first time, a bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima. It was just before I crossed Enko Bridge. "Grr, thump, thump!" What a frightening noise it made! Then, a thick cloud of smoke rose up. I went there right away and saw a fire burning intensely. July 6 (Friday) Today was a work day. In the morning, we dug holes to bury glass. At lunch, I ate a loquat. Uehara gave it to me. I also ate some peas and a sweet potato. During our rest time at lunch, we played hide-and-seek. It was a lot of fun. In the afternoon, we carried tree branches. 前の広島県 (ドーム) WOL 1. What made Kawamoto worried on 2. Wh 広島の様子

plainly Dreaming is a universal phenomenon, though much of what we dream may be forgotten, and some few persons are able only rarely to remember their dreams on waking. The dream represents mental activity during sleep. For this reason the workings of the unconscious mind can be more p 5 seen here than anywhere else. Ordinarily the thoughts and wishes of the unconscious mind are unknown to us, though it contains the source of creative and instinctive energy. As the oldest part of the concept-forming apparatus, it makes liberal use of such primitive methods of representation as symbolism. In a very general way, the unconscious mind of present-day man may be 10 compared to the conscious mind of the caveman, and dreams often remind us of the picture writing of the caveman, where a relatively few simple pictures used as symbols told a detailed story of events. In addition, it is the function of a dream to express a wish, but since the wishes of the unconscious are often highly instinctive in nature, they would be 15 as disturbing to most modern persons as would the acts of a caveman in present-day society. Therefore, most dreams are disguised enough to conceal their true meaning from the dreamer. This is accomplished through the intervention of the conscience, a much more recently developed function of the brain. In psychoanalysis an effort to get the true meaning of the dream is 20 made by having the dreamer give all his thoughts and feelings about every element of the dream. These are then pieced together by the analyst, who uses his knowledge of the life history of the individual as a reference point. By this means, unconscious thoughts and wishes, as well as long-forgotten experiences, can be revealed so as to give the dreamer a much more complete understand- 25 ing of himself.
