作者はさっき、「下人が雨やみを待っていた。」と書いた。しかし、下人は 格別どうしようという当てはない。 ふだんなら、もちろん、主人の家へ帰るべきはずであ る。ところがその主人からは、四、五目前に暇を出された。前にも書いたように、当時京 都の町はひととおりならず衰微していた。今この下人が、永年、使われていた主人から、 暇を出されたのも、実はこの衰微の小さな余波にほかならない。だから「下人が雨やみを 待っていた。」と言うよりも「雨に降りこめられた下人が、行き所がなくて、途方に暮れて いた。」と言うほうが、適当である。そのうえ、今日の空模様も少なからず、この平安朝の カチンチマンタリス 下人の Sentimentalisme に影響した。 中の刻下がりから降り出した雨は、いまだに上がる 気色がない。そこで、下人は、何をおいても差し当たり明日の暮らしをどうにかしようと していわばどうにもならないことを、どうにかしようとして、とりとめもない考えを たどりながら、さっきから朱雀大路に降る雨の音を、聞くともなく聞いていたのである。 雨は羅生門を包んで、遠くから、ざあっという音を集めてくる。 夕闇はしだいに空を 低くして、見上げると、門の屋根が、斜めに突き出したの先に、重たく薄暗い雲を支え どうにもならないことを、どうにかするためには、手段を選んでいるいとまはない。 選 んでいれば、土の下か、道の土の上で、飢え死にをするばかりである。そうして、こ の門の上へ持ってきて、犬のように捨てられてしまうばかりである。選ばないとすれば 下人の考えは、何度も同じ道を回したあげくに、やっとこの局所へ逢着した。しかしこ の「すれば」は、いつまでたっても、結局「すれば」であった。下人は、手段を選ばない ということを肯定しながらも、この「すれば」のかたをつけるために、当然、そのあとに 来るべき「盗人になるよりほかにしかたがない。」ということを、積極的に肯定するだけの、 勇気が出ずにいたのである。 下人は、大きなくめをして、それから、大儀そうに立ち上がった。夕冷えのする京都 は、もう火桶が欲しいほどの寒さである。風は門の柱と柱との間を、夕闇とともに遠慮な く、吹き抜ける。丹塗りの柱にとまっていたきりぎりすも、もうどこかへ行ってしまった。 下人は、首を縮めながら、山の疹に重ねた、紺の襖の肩を高くして、門の周りを見 回した。雨風の憂えのない、人目にかかる恐れのない、一晩楽に寝られそうな所があれば、 そこでともかくも、夜を明かそうと思ったからである。すると、幸い門の上の楼へ上る、 幅の広い、これも丹を塗ったはしごが目についた。上なら、人がいたにしても、どうせ死 人ばかりである。下人はそこで、腰にさげたの太刀が華だらないように気をつけなが ら、わら草履を履いた足を、そのはしごのいちばん下の段へ踏みかけた。 Free Pas からか ほうなん S S
