o Do you know about universal design ?
ユニバーサルデザインって知ってる?
O “Universal” means “for all people.”
「ユニバーサル」は、 「すべての人に対して」という意味なんだよ。
O So, universal design is useful for everyone.
だからユニバーサルデザインはみんなが使いやすいの。
OI'll show you two examples of it in our city.
これからうちらの市内にある例を2つ紹介しまーす。
OLook at this sign.
この標識をちょっと見て。
OIt uses a picture, English and easy Japanese.
絵と英語、 あと簡単な日本語を使ってるよね。
OI can understand it easily.
すぐに理解できるの。
O Young children can understand it, too.
ちっちゃい子でもわかるんだ。

ONext, do you see the ramp by the stairs ?
はいつぎー、階段のそばにあるスロープ見える?
O If you're in a wheelchair or pulling heavy baggage, you can use
the ramp.
もし車いすに乗ってたり重い荷物を引っぱってたらこのスロープを使えるよ。
OIt also helps the elderly and people with babies or small children.
他にもお年寄りとか、 赤ちゃんやちっちゃい子連れの人の助けにもなるね。
OI'm sure that these facilities help many people.

ORonald Mace, an American professor, is the father of universal
design.
アメリカの教授、ロナルド・メイスはユニバーサルデザインの生みの親です。
OHe was in a wheelchair from childhood, and often had a difficult
time.
彼は幼いころから車いすに乗っており、 苦労することがよくありました。
OIn the 1970s, people started to remove barriers for some disabled
people, but Ronald had a different idea.
1970年代、人々は体の不自由な人にとっての障壁を取り除こうとし始めました

OHe wanted to make designs for all people, regardless of age,
ability, or situation.
