Differences between the Japanese and Americans appear in "attitudes toward human
beauty. In Japan, a woman's *fair *complexion has always been regarded as a sign of
beauty. Even now, during the summer, it is common to see Japanese women carefully
protecting their faces from the sun with parasols or hats.
In America, skin *tanned to a golden brown is considered the ideal among both
men and women. Those who are unable to tan easily may *resort to applying special
tanning creams to their faces, arms and legs for an instant tan. Young university students
may go to the roofs of apartment buildings or lay out blankets on the front lawns of
*dormitories to *bask in the sun.
