イルカは数えられる名詞なので文中に出てきた時dolphin のみということはなく、 a dolphinやthe dolphinと出てきます(英語のルールです)
theがつくと、そのイルカとかさっき出てきたイルカとかのように、なにか特定のイルカを指す時に出てきます
