本来はcan、can’tの過去形なので、I could run fast.や、I couldn’t eat fish.のように使いますが、過去形で相手との距離を表し、Could you teach me math?のように、丁寧な依頼の表現にもなります。これはwillの過去形であるwouldでも同じです。
