「(…に)~があります(います)」と人やものの存在を表す時は There is(are)~ (+
場所を表す語句)〉を用いる。
・文頭の There は 「存在」を表し、主語にはならない。 be動詞のあとの‘〜(人やものを
表す語) が主語になる。
・be動詞は、 主語が単数ならis, 複数なら are を使う。
・過去を表す文では、主語が単数なら was, 複数なら were を使う。
・water や money のような形を持たない名詞 (物質名詞)は単数扱いとし, There is(was)

特定のものの存在を表す文
There is (are)の文は、不特定の人やもの (a〔an) ~ two some a lot of 〜な
ど) があることを示す場合に使う。
特定のもの (the ~my ~ this ~ those ~など) があることを示す場合には、ふつう
使わない。人名や地名の場合にも使うことはできない。
例文) My sister is in the yard.
The boys are on the tennis court.
