LESSON 3 The Debate Girls Part 1 Hello, everyone! My name is Asuka. I am the captain of our English debate club. I guess / most of you don't know what debate is like. I enjoy it the same as many of you enjoy sports/such as tennis or volleyball. M But debate needs neither racket nor ball. Part 2 Hi, I'm Misono. In our first year, we ended up in 22nd place at the national championship. That was our turning point; / we were determined never to be defeated again. Our common goal was to win the championship next year. We started to practice six days a week, till late every evening. Sometimes / I had to run/so as not to miss the last train home. The situation was more difficult for Asuka / because it took her two hours to wwww commute. Still,/she never complained. It made us practice harder. ~ Let me explain how we practice. The essential tool is a stopwatch. In a debate,/you must speak as logically and fluently as possible. For instance, you need to speak as many as 320 words in two minutes. We repeat such training with a stopwatch / over and over every day. Try it yourself and you'll realize the speed, but be careful not to bite your tongue! Time is very important during a match. Part 3 Hello, my name is Yuka. I am junior to the other three, so they have taught me the ABCs of debate. One of them is the importance of research. MW The more data we have, /the more persuasive our argument will be.
