"Seeing is believing." as the old saying goes.
BABETUR

Yes, that is true, but we often forget that there are several ways
of seeing things. In other words, we see things differently depending on what time, distance or angle we choose
to see them.
We know quite a few examples which produce interesting optical illusions. Look at the picture of a
5 Venetian mask. How many faces do you find? Just one? Look more carefully, and you will discern
two distinct faces: a man and a woman kissing one another. Dit is probably because we usually
believe that/can/we/a mask/a face/matches/only make 1 out one face at first.
What is important is that we cannot tell which view is correct. both are correct, actually. If we have one, the
other is gone, and vice versa: they cover and hide each other.
10 The trouble is that we tend to assume that our first perception tells us everything about the object. But the
assumption is not quite correct. We should be aware of factors affecting our ways of seeing and ask ourselves if
there are alternative views possible. In order to do that, we have to give our imagination full play.
When we are looking at the statue known as the Nike of Samothrace, we are free to imagine any
expression she might have held on her face. The absence of something sets our imagination in
) pieces. We are fully allowed to have several views, and some of them

may not agree with the generally accepted explanations of the statue.

Exercising imagination is not always easy, however. When there is no obvious absence in the object, our
imagination is prone to stop working and sleep. Take a TV program on Christmas, for instance. When it
depicts Santa Claus traveling in the anow, we feel, in spite of ourselves, that it captures the (
20 atmosphere of Christmas. Yet, there are many areas in the world where people celebrate Christmas in summer.
In those places, we may see Santa Claus arriving on a surfboard. The view of a white Christmas is localised and
partial: it covers and hides other possible views of Christmas under its beautiful image.
Needless to say, it is natural for us to have partial views since we are not omniscient. Seeing is believing.
certainly, but seeing sometimes needs disbelieving. What is of the first importance is that we should try to
25 see, through the eyes of imagination, what is normally invisible in our view.
