何故そうなるのでしょうか。

元の文のthat節がwentなので、変にいじらずそのままで良かった問題だと思います。太陽が地球の周りを回っているというのは現在では間違いなので、そういう意味でも元の文では過去形にしている側面もあるのではないでしょうか。
