固有名詞にtheがつく時とつかない時の違いはなんですか?

回答

✨ ベストアンサー ✨

1. 一般名詞の複数形を含むもの。山脈などが典型的。
the United States(stateが一般名詞、その複数形), the Rocky Mountains(mountainが一般名詞)

2. 一般名詞を使った固有名詞
the White House(米国大統領のホワイトハウス。a white house は一軒の白い家)

3. 湖、海、川などの自然
the Atlantic ocean, the Amazon river
(山にはつかない。Mount Fujiというのがふつう)

4. 歴史的なもの
the University of Tokyo(日本で唯一の大学だったのでthe)、に対して Kyoto University (あとから増えた大学)。

Use the when typically a name is not said but a specific place is mentioned.
Don't use the when you use a specific name of a place (most of the time).

The convenience store around the corner....
Seven Eleven

The Rocky Mountains are not a specific location. The Rockies extend from Canada down towards Arizona. So we use The because it is not One mountain or one place but a whole chain of mountains.

Not the Mount Fuji but just Fuji because it is only one place with a name.

The Pacific Ocean because the ocean covers a lot of area. It is not just one place.

The Amazon Jungle because it is so big it is not just one place.

The University of .... because the University doesn't have a name.

The White House because it doesn't really have a name but it is the most important White House in America.

Stanford doesn't need the because it is the name of One place which is a University.

The + nonspecific named place
The + the name of something that is not only in one place but has a huge area.

No the A place with a name that is in only one place.

I hope this helps.

Thank you so much, but it is too difficult for me.

A small place with a name = no the
No name or a large mountain chain, jungle or forest, or sea that covers a very large area and not just one place = use [the]

The University of Arizona has no name of its own so use the.
Stanford University is the name of the place so don't use the.

The Rocky Mountains use the because it is not the name of one mountain point but a chain of Mountains that go on forever.

The Pacific Ocean use the because the ocean is very big and doesn't just exist in one place. It is all over the one side of the world between America and Asia to include Australia and Antarctica.

Ichikawa doesn't need the because the river is only in one area in Japan and it has a name.

I don't know how to make it easier than that.

Thank you so much 💧
