Use the when typically a name is not said but a specific place is mentioned.
Don't use the when you use a specific name of a place (most of the time).
The convenience store around the corner....
Seven Eleven
The Rocky Mountains are not a specific location. The Rockies extend from Canada down towards Arizona. So we use The because it is not One mountain or one place but a whole chain of mountains.
Not the Mount Fuji but just Fuji because it is only one place with a name.
The Pacific Ocean because the ocean covers a lot of area. It is not just one place.
The Amazon Jungle because it is so big it is not just one place.
The University of .... because the University doesn't have a name.
The White House because it doesn't really have a name but it is the most important White House in America.
Stanford doesn't need the because it is the name of One place which is a University.
The + nonspecific named place
The + the name of something that is not only in one place but has a huge area.
No the A place with a name that is in only one place.
I hope this helps.
