(配点44) If we examine the history of advances in all technological fields, we see that some improvements come naturally through the technology itself, while others come through standardization. The early history of the automobile is a good example. The first cars were very difficult to operate. They required strength and skill beyond the abilities of many. Some problems were solved through automation. Other aspects of cars and driving were standardized through the long process of international standards committees: . On which side of the road to drive (constant within countries) country, but variable across On which side f the car the driver sits (depends upon which side of the road the car is driven) -The (2) of essential components: steering wheel, brake, clutch, and accelerator (the same, whether on the left- or right-hand side of the car) Standardization is one type of cultural constraint. With standardization, once you have learned to drive one car, you feel confident that you can drive any car, anyplace in the world. Standardization provides a major breakthrough in usability. I have enough friends on national and international standards committees to realize that the process f determining an internationally accepted standard is laborious. Even when all members agree on the merits of standardization, the task of selecting standards becomes a long, political issue. A small company can standardize its products without too much difficulty, but it is much more difficult for an industrial, national, or international body to agree to standards. There even exists a standardized procedure for establishing national and international standards. organizations works on standards. First, a set of national and international Then when a new standard is proposed, it must work its way through each organization's approval process. Standards are usually the result of a *compromise among the various competing positions, which can often be an inferior compromise. Sometimes the answer is to agree on (4 ). Look at the existence I both metric and *English units; of left-hand- and 18 right-hand-drive automobiles. There are several international standards for the *voltages and *frequencies of electricity, and several different kinds of electrical plugs and sockets- which cannot interchanged. With all these difficulties and with the continual advances in technology, are standards really necessary? Yes, they are. Take the everyday, clock. It's standardized. Consider how much trouble you would have telling time with a backward clock, where the hands revolved "counterclockwise." A few such clocks exist, primarily as humorous conversation pieces. When a clock truly violates standards, such as (the one in Figure 1, it is difficult to determine what time is being displayed. Why? The logic behind the time display is identical to that of conventional clocks: there are only two differences - the hands move in the opposite direction (counterclockwise) and the location of "12," usually at the top, has been moved. This clock is just as logical as the standard one. It. bothers us because we have standardized on a different scheme, on the very definition of the term clockwise. Without such standardization, clock reading would be more difficult: you'd always have to figure out the "mapping. 王 jon 【目標解答時間 15分 配点 37点 15 次の英文を読み, 下記の設問 (A~D) に答えなさい。 Fire is "a good servant but a bad master." In my house, in summer, I smell the air for the faintest hint of smoke as keenly as any horse or dog or kangaroo. I watch for columns of smoke, visualising again and again how fire could rush( 1 )the hill towards us. But if you are philosophical about it, fire is a natural 5 part of the Australian environment and has been for millions of years. Living with the threat of fire in the bush, or in the wild, is like living with sharks when diving, or with snakes while walking, or with traffic accidents on a city street. The idea that we should remove every shark from the sea, or every snake from the land, and control- burn, or deliberately set fire, to prevent any risk of 10 bushfires is a recipe for making the environment even worse. As Phil Koperberg, head of the New South Wales Fire Brigades, said ( 2 ) the Sydney bushfires of 1994, amid calls for massive control burning, “Do you want to concrete over all the bush? If you choose to live in the bush, you choose to accept the risk. f It is often claimed that some Austratian plants and animals have actually adapted to fire, evidence of an extraordinarily long period (millions of years before human arrival) during which fire has been more significant in the Australian environment than it has been on any other continent, but this is probably not strictly true. Many plants have adapted to the environment in 20 ways that also happen to be valuable in times of fire. ( 3 ), animals have adapted to a variety of different habitats, and can therefore survive during different periods of vegetation regrowth after a fire (or after, say, a cyclone, a flood, or just a tree falling in a forest). A tree that has the ability to regenerate from roots or lower trunk when the 25 upper tree dies as a result of being broken off in a storm, or falls over, rotten to the core, will also be able to respond when the upper part is killed by a fire. Seeds adapted to long hot droughts, and requiring a combination of heat and water for germination", will also find a fire, if followed by rain, a good stimulus for growing new plants. There does appear to be evidence that chemicals in 30 smoke can help promote growth in plants, but whether this is a direct 可能性があるかを 何度も が続いているのだ。 森林地帯, ダイビングのときにサメ, そやカンガルーにも負けな の匂いを嗅ぐ。 私は,どのよ 暮らすようなものである。 海 しき主人である」( れば, 火事はオーストラリア >> のヘビを取り除くべきだと 意図的に火を放つべきだ , 1994年のシドニー ている真っ只中 と言った。 入れるこ

Unit 12 Change the World Basic A few years ago, an obesity* researcher at the University of Washington-named Adam Drewnowski ventured into the supermarket to solve a mystery. He wanted to (1) figure out why (2)poor people were more likely to suffer from obesity in America. Obesity is, as you know, mainly caused by taking in too many calories. For most of history the poor have typically suffered from a shortage of calories, not an excess. So why do the people with the least amount of money to spend on food tend to be overweight today? 目 Drewnowski gave himself a dollar to spend, using it to purchase as many calories as he possibly could. He discovered that he could buy the most calories per dollar in the middle aisles of the supermarket, among the towering piles of* processed food and soft drinks. 3 Processed food is, in the broadest sense, any food that is changed from its natural, raw state. But here, it refers to food which has been chemically changed by using additives* such as flavors, colors, preservatives*, stabilizers*, etc., or which has been combined with other foods in a manufacturing process. Generally speaking, if the ingredients* aren't “natural,” then we consider it to be ( 3 ). Drewnowski found that a dollar could buy 1,200 calories of cookies or potato chips, which are typical processed foods, but only 250 calories of carrots. Looking for something to wash down those chips, he discovered that his dollar bought 875 calories of soda (a processed food) but only 170 calories of orange juice. 5 As a rule, processed foods are more “energy dense*” than fresh foods: they contain less water and fiber but more added fat and sugar, which makes them both (4)less filling and more fattening. 5 These particular calories also happen to be the least healthful ones in the marketplace, which is why we call the foods that contain them "junk*.” Drewnowski concluded that the rules of the food game in America are organized in such a way that if you are eating (6) on a budget, the most rational economic strategy is to eat badly-and get fat.

Constructive criticism can be offered in an indirect S V S [Asking someone who is very close to the person (to be criticized) to speak on your behalf ] is a thoughtful act. V C way.
