After his death, he was (12) made a Saint for his good deeds. Saint Nicholas became especially famous as the patron saint of 歴史の sailors and children. 守護 (13) How then did this historical figure from Asia Minor evolve into the Santa Claus we see at Christmas today? Saint Nicholas is said to have died in the middle of the fourth century on December 6, which later became a holiday called Saint Nicholas Day. The story of Saint Nicholas gradually spread through Europe after his death, and people in different countries began celebrating this day by giving gifts. In the Netherlands, which had grown into a powerful nation through the sea trade, Saint Nicholas Day became one of the most important days on the calendar The Dutch began settling in America in the 17th century. settled in the city of New Amsterdam, which is today New York. 移民 Many Dutch immigrants The Dutch residents of New Amsterdam celebrated Saint Nicholas Day (14)just as they had at home in the Netherlands. (15) Thus, the tradition of exchanging gifts on Saint Nicholas Day became an American custom too. (16)In fact, the name "Santa Claus" comes from the Dutch “Sinterklaas," which means Saint Nicholas.

(17) It took a little longer for Saint Nicholas, the stern bishop wearing a tall pointed hat and riding on a horse, to become the jolly Santa Claus we know today. In 1822 a New York schoolteacher, Clement Moore, wrote a famous poem entitled A Visit from Saint Nicholas. (18) This poem presents a completely different Saint Nicholas, one who visits children on Christmas Eve. (V)ます Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there ; ... a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer, With a little old driver, so lively and quick, .... Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot...... He had a broad face and a little round bellyお腹 ゼリー That shook, when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly.... This poem does not portray the religious Saint Nicholas of history. Instead, it portrays a jolly, fat little old man riding on a sleigh drawn by reindeer. Moore describes him vividly as if he had actually met him in real life. A Visit from Saint Nicholas was published in a picture book and widely read in America at the time. Moore's Saint Nicholas was shown as an elf in this storybook, (19)but in the 1930s the image of Santa Claus changed again when he appeared in an advertisement for a soft drink as a grandfatherly character with a jolly smile. And (20)so Santa Claus became the figure we know todayのおな その代わりに、トナカイの引くソリに乗った。

When you were little, you must have wondered “Is there really a Santa Claus?" About a hundred years ago an eight-year-old girl named Virginia asked the same question in a letter she sent to a newspaper called the Sun. Francis Church, a writer for the newspaper, wrote this article in reply 返事として 寛大さ “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. (21) He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist.... Nobody sees Santa Claus, but (22) that is not a sign that there is no Santa Claus. (23) The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor adults can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's not proof that they are 妖精たち 芝生 not there.... "No Santa Claus? Thank God he lives, and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, no, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to (24) make the hearts of children glad." Church's message was that the most important things in life are not visible to the eye. You cannot see love, but it most certainly exists. You cannot see kindness, but an act of 優しさ kindness brings smiles to people's faces. The image of Santa Claus has changed in different cultures through the centuries, but (25) what he symbolizes remains the same: the spirit of goodwill to others. Anyone who has 善意 that spirit can become a true Santa Claus. 同格(~という) (22) that is not a sign that there is no Santa Claus.

例えばこの例文ならas a mother talksとto her childを副詞の()を分けてかたまりを作ると考えてました。
