Kate Shota, what do you want to be in the
future?
Shota: I want to be an astronaut. Do you know
about Mr. Hoshide, a Japanese astronaut ?
He went into space on July 15, 2012. He 5
stayed in the ISS, and came back to the
earth on November 19 that year. He did
many experiments in space. I want to be
like him.
: That's a nice dream. I've also been 10
interested in space since I saw him on TV.

John Well, do you think space development is really necessary? I don't think so
because it needs too much money. I've heard that about 4 billion yen was
needed when Mr. Hoshide went into space and came back to the earth. I think 1
we must use the money to save people in need. Saving people is more important
than space development.
B
Mari I think so, too. I read a book D(write) by a person working to save people
suffering from starvation. About 17 people die of starvation every minute all over
the world. With 30 yen, they can each have one lunch.
Shota I understand John's and Mari's ideas. But I think it's important to do
experiments in space. We can develop a lot of new technology through
experiments. For example, if we can find a (③) to get more food, there
will be no starvation in the world.
D
John Oh, that's true. If we can stop starvation, we can save a lot of people. Now 25
I'm starting to think that space development is necessary. When you become an
astronaut, could you help people in need by developing new technology?
Shota Of course, I will try.
