「学校の初日は彼らはたいてい(不安なのと)同様にワクワクもしている」

he or she is (男女の差別がないように he or she になっています) they と考えて構いません
more often than not 「大抵の場合」連語
is excited 「ワクワクしている」
as well 「同様に」
