おおもとは、it is ～ that …「…なのは～だ」という強調構文です。～の中にbecauseが入り、that以下が前の文と同じ場合に省略されたものが次の定型句になりました。
it is because ～(それは～だからだ)
itは強調構文のitでしたが、前の文の内容を受ける代名詞となり、itの代わりにthisも来るようになりました。
