マルガレーテは以前, 洋裁学校に通ったことがありました. 初めのうちは、彼女は裁縫がき
わめて困難だと感じました. 右腕を少し動かしただけでも痛み, 左手は器用に動かすことがで
きませんでした. しかしそのどれも, 彼女が全力を尽くす妨げにはなりませんでした. 彼女は
2人の姉とともに仕立屋を始めようと決意しました. シュタイフ姉妹は丁寧な仕事をすると,
すぐに町中で評判になりました.
1880年, 33歳のとき, マルガレーテは雑誌でゾウのぬいぐるみの型紙を見つけ、それを使
