Moderator: Our topic today is leadership, a topic that should be of interest to everyone in these difficult times when the world is facing many challenges and leadership is more important than ever. But today I'd like to consider this issue on a level closer to home. Suppose you are a member of a sports team 5 or some other organization. What sort of person do you think is suitable for the position of captain or leader? What qualities does it take to be a good leader? Many people have different ideas on this issue based on their own personal experiences. 10 Masahiko First of all, the leader must be respected by the other teammates. If I were in a sports club, I would like the captain to be an excellent player who can set an example for the rest of the team. No matter what the sport, I don't believe players can respect a captain who is not also a 15 talented player. What he says must be convincing, and the other players would follow such a leader. Otherwise, I might not think it's necessary to listen to a player who isn't as good as I am. Moderator: So, Masahiko, you are saying that leadership lies in 20 32 good companionship よい仲間づきあい Thoughtful behavior.

Date Yumiko: I don't agree with Masahiko. It seems to me that talented people tend to assume that others can and should do things the same way that they do them, I belonged to a tennis club when I was in junior high school. I practiced hard, but couldn't become one of the top players. I don't regret it 30. because I tried my best, but I was a little frustrated by the, captain always criticizing me for my slow progress. I want a leader to understand how each player feels. There have. been many successful coaches in major league baseball and other professional sports who were not star players 35 themselves. They succeeded as leaders because they understood the game and knew how to get the best out of their players. On the other hand, people with a lot of natural athletic ability often can't relate to the feelings of players who need to work harder to achieve their goals. 40 Moderator Okay, Yumiko, your view is that the primary requirement for a good leader is 33 • the ability to relax the other players ほかの選手をリラックスさせることができる能力 the ability to help the other players make progress. ほかの選手がうまくなるように助けることができる能力 the ability to make the other players practice hard ほかの選手に一生懸命練習させることができる能力 the ability to show consideration for the other players.

Date Moderator: Are there any other views on leadership ? George : From my experience as captain of a soccer club in junior high school, I associate leadership with having the capacity for troubleshooting. Players are individuals, and they all 50 have their own reasons for getting involved in sports and their own ideas about how things should be done. So it is not rare that there are differences of opinions in a group, or that some players don't get along well with others. They sometimes quarrel or even fight. The leader must treat all 55 the teammates fairly and try to strengthen the unity of the group. Moderator: Thank you, George. What you've said is that 34 図① a leader always has his or her own opinion and express it strongly リーダーはいつも自分自身の意見を持ち、それを力強く発信する ② a leader should help the other players get along well with each other リーダーはほかの選手がお互いにとても仲良くしていくのを手助けすべきだ ▷ジョージは「問題解決能力を持っている」「選手同エベロ論やけんかをしても全員を公共に扱わないといけない ③ a leader should not quanel or fight with the other players for any reason リーダーはほかの選手と、どんな理由があっても口論したり、けんかしたりすべきでない ▷「選手同士の口調やけんかを公平に扱う」と言っている。 ☺ a leader tends to prevent trouble among the other player

Date (1) I started jogging after I moved into the on-campus dormitory of my university. It has become my morning habit over the last two years to leave the dorm room around 7 a.m. and jog through the campus while it's still quiet. It was during this routine jog that I came across something interesting one day: elderly men running at full speed on the 5 lawn. The two men looked to be in their 70s and were apparently running much faster than I was. Intrigued, I approached these men and talked to them as they took a break. As it turned out, they were practicing for an athletic competition for older people. They were scheduled to leave for Finland to participate in the World Masters 10 Athletics Championships, where athletes from all over the world were to meet and compete in track and field competitions. They also told me that they were both actually 90 years old! (2) The World Masters Athletics is an organization administering athletic events for "masters," or men and women of not less than 35 15 years of age. As I learned, the story of veteran athletics had a half century of history starting as a grass-roots movement by middle-aged men and women striving for enjoyment and good health attained through physical fitness. One of the earliest records dates back to 1949. The first marathon event to permit runners to compete at their 20 own age level was held in the Netherlands in 1968. After the 1972 = 57° Olympics in Munich, the first truly international track and field 年齢がわかれている ↑ (3) gathering for masters took place in London. In these masters' competitions, athletes are grouped into five-year age groups, such as 80-84, 85-89, 90-94, 95-99 and 100 or over. So the 25 men I met on campus - - Mr. Lawrence and Mr. Healy would compete in the 90-94 class, which explained their feelings of having an advantage in this year's competition. "I feel young now that I've

Date (6) 70才から 1481 reached 90," Mr. Lawrence said. They also told me that in recent years they have witnessed a generation of track and field athletes who 30 are breaking records at ages once considered too old for competition. A number of records were broken in just the past 12 months. "It es, makes you look forward to getting older," Mr. Healy said. A POL [(4) Mr. Lawrence said, "I did not start running until I was 65. When I became a widower, a friend suggested running together, then training 35 for a marathon." He ran 12 marathons before dropping to shorter distances. "You have a whole group of people over 70 who are part of the world," Mr. Healy said. "In 1950, you were old when you were 50. Now I feel old only when I have to use my fingers to handle small objects." 40 (5) The philosophy of "sport for all" is actually promoted not only in track and field, but also in other sports. There is even an equivalent of the Olympic Games, called the World Masters Games, held about every four years in different host cities. "Its governing body, the International Masters Games Association, operates with the support of the 45 International Olympic Committee and shares five members of its. 12-person board with the IOC. The minimum age requirements for the World Masters Games range between 25 and 35 depending on the sport, but all competitions permit athletes to compete in their age groups. According to the IOC's Sport for All Commission, Sport for All is "a 50 movement promoting the Olympic ideal that sport is a human right for all individuals regardless of race, social class and sex. The movement encourages sports activities that can be done by people of all ages, of both sexes and of different social and economic conditions." Although I still have years left until I am qualified for these masters' events, the 55 knowledge of older people actively participating in sports has motivated me even more to stay fit for years to come. The Nobel Prize is a set of international awards established by the will of Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel. These awards are presented for achievements in the fields of physics, chemistry, *physiology or medicine, literature, peace, and economics. The Nobel Prize is regarded as the most prestigious award in nearly all of these fields. 2 5 The prizes have been awarded yearly since 1901. Each laureate (winner) receives a gold medal, a certificate, and prize money. The amount of the prize is decided by the Nobel Foundation and depends on how much money the foundation can award each year. "A laureate is not limited to one individual, and up to three people can share a prize in all fields except 10 literature. The Peace Prize is the only prize that can be awarded to organizations as well as individuals. It has been awarded to organizations such as Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) in 1999 and the European Union in 2012. 3 Table 1 shows the ten top-ranked countries by number of laureates 15 from 1901 to 2011. The country with by far the largest number of laureates is the United States of America, followed by the United Kingdom. The U.S. has the most laureates in all the fields except literature. The country that has the largest number of laureates for literature is France, followed by the U.K. Of the top ten countries, the Netherlands is the only 20 one that has no laureates in literature. 4 The only Asian country among the top ten countries in Table 1 is Japan, ranked eighth. Like Italy and Switzerland, Japan has laureates in every field except economics. More Japanese laureates were recognized for their achievements in chemistry than in any other field, followed by 25 physics. In both fields these totals are exactly one fourth those of Germany. The basic policy of the Nobel Prize is that each prize will be given to 5 individuals or organizations who have benefitted mankind the most, regardless of what country they are from. So the committees that award 30 the prizes do not announce the laureates' nationalities. In reality, however, the number of laureates is believed to reflect the scientific or cultural levels of the laureates' nations. *) *physiology =4*

"Is it marked 'curtains"?" she asked hopefully, measuring a living-room window and noting her findings on a pad. When I told her the box was marked "photo albums," she lost interest. "Just leave it where it won't be in the way," she said, and went back to 5 her measuring. Why was Mom so interested in curtains? We hadn't even finished unloading the rented trailer. Surely the curtains could wait until we my father, my sister, my brother and I had a chance to get all the boxes and furniture inside. Yet as my mother moved from one 10 window to the next with her yardstick and note pad, she seemed driven by a mysterious urgency. "Why bother with curtains?" I asked her as I carried in a "bath towels" box. "We're just going to move again anyway," I said. Sparks flared in Mom's blue eyes. "I don't want to hear any rude remarks from you, young man," she said. I was startled. She was 15 usually so quiet and even-tempered. "Sorry. I was just wondering," I said. "Well, don't," she snapped. "Now get back to work." 43 The house we were moving into this time a small Cape Cod in the suburbs of Milwaukee was the ninth we'd lived in since I'd been born. "Is your dad in the Army?" kids would ask me when we moved to 20 yet another new neighborhood. No, moving was just what my father did. It was in his blood. We moved when he switched jobs. Or when he decided that our house was too small. Or too big. Or too close to the neighbors. Or too far from town. We'd moved so often that sometimes we found ourselves moving 25 cartons that hadn't been unpacked since the last move or even the one before. At least a few of the unopened cartons would contain the curtains that hadn't fit anywhere in the old house but that my mother

had saved anyway. "You never know. We might be able to use them in
the next place," she'd say with a laugh. I always assumed the joke was 30
about her trying to save money. Now, for the first time, it occurred to
me that maybe the laugh lay elsewhere: in the fact that we all knew
that for us there'd always be a next place. And a next. And it occurred
to me, too, that maybe the joke wasn't very funny. Is that why Mom was
so upset about my remark? Did I hit a sore spot ?
35
By the time we'd finished emptying the trailer, Mom was done
measuring the windows and was down on her knees looking through the
boxes, searching for whichever curtains might fit our new reality. In a
surprisingly short time she had curtains picked out for every room in
the house. And I was happy to see that for Michael's and my room, 40
she'd picked out a set of cowboy curtains with *bucking horses. She
smiled and said, "Do you still like them?" "Sure I do," I answered.
That's when a suspicion began to form in my mind. Making a quick
tour of the house, I saw that I was right: I recognized all the other
curtains too. The yellow cotton print curtains in my sister's room were 45
the same ones she had two years and two houses ago. The kitchen
curtains had last appeared at our most recent lake house. And the
living-room curtains had once hung in our dining room in Detroit.
So that's what Mom's been doing! By putting the curtains up
quickly, she was taking some of the strangeness out of our new 50
surroundings. In her own way she was doing her best to ease the
sudden transitions that upset our lives *time and again. Dad may have
made the decisions when it came to deciding when we'd move next, and
where, and which house we'd live in. But always it was Mom's curtains
that made those houses home.

Date 101 10 7+19 A The Japanese term "ikumen" comes from "iku," an abbreviation (a shortened form) of "ikuji," meaning child-rearing, and the English word "men." So "ikumen" are "men raising children." The Japanese government uses this term to encourage men to take a more active part in child-rearing. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare defines "ikumen" as "men who 5 enjoy childcare or who want to do so in the future." By law, all workers in Japan can take childcare leave for up to one [38] year. But very few Japanese men use this system, while many women quit their full-time jobs in order to concentrate on child-rearing. According to the results of an international survey reported on by the 10 Japanese government in 2011, the percentage of men in Japan who took childcare leave was the lowest of the five countries surveyed (France, Japan, South Korea, Sweden, and the United States), as shown in Table 1. When asked what childcare system they had used, only 4.8 percent of the Japanese men answered "childcare leave," while 17.0 percent of Japanese 15 women said so. Sweden had the highest percentage of men who took 37 childcare leave, followed by France. The percentage of South Korean men who said they had taken childcare leave was the second lowest, and that of the women there was the lowest. In the case of the U.S., slightly more than 20 percent of men and women said they had taken childcare leave. 38 The survey also revealed that Japanese workers tended to depend on childcare facilities such as kindergartens, nursery schools and after-school children's clubs instead of taking childcare leave. Although this is not a problem, the number of childcare facilities is limited, so they are not 33 20 available to everyone. In fact, many children in urban areas are unable to 25 enter such facilities because they are full.

例えばこの例文ならas a mother talksとto her childを副詞の()を分けてかたまりを作ると考えてました。
