A Forest resources have long been important to humans. They provide energy in the form of fuel wood, as well as building material in the form of timber. In recent years much attention has been focused on the use of biomass as a source of energy that can replace oil and other non-renewable sources. Burning wood as fuel is extremely inefficient, so the main focus around the world has been on biomass-derived fuels (so-called "biofuels"). These are typically made using plants with high ratios of sugar or refined from plant-derived oils such as palm oil. Of the 3.4 billion m3 of forest cut down annually worldwide, approximately half is used as fuel. This is a volume approximately equal to the volume of Japan's entire naturally growing stock of forests (1.8 billion m³). This means that the use of wood as fuel has a significant 25 impact on forest resources on a global scale." The amount of wood used as fuel is particularly large in Africa, Asia, and South America, where more than 50 percent of the wood from harvested trees ends up as fuel, as compared with Europe and North and Central America, where the figures range from about 10 to 20 percent (See Table 1). Due to poverty, a larger 35 percentage of wood is used as fuel in Africa than in any other region. With growing demand for food in recent years, the amount of land used for agriculture has been increasing and the sizes of forests have been decreasing, primarily in tropical areas in Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia. Because official data do not reflect illegal logging and other unreported forest destruction, there are concerns that actual decreases in the amount of forested land may be far greater than official figures show.

Tom な トン100 Earth's forests must be protected. In areas where a decline in forest resources can be observed, it is necessary to improve governance in forest management. Because poverty and the need for more food are often behind forest destruction, proper management must include anti-poverty measures. In addition, international promotion of alternative biomass energy sources such as waste biomass may make it less likely that impoverished local people will destroy forests to grow crops to be used in the production of biofuels. Datel 問3 31 Though humans have traditionally eaten mostly plant foods, we are eating more meat these days. Olf demand for meat continues to rise, it could have terrible effects on the planet because already huge amounts More is required of land are used to grow food for the animals we eat. each year and this means we are now destroying rainforests faster than ever before. To make matters worse, the enormous farms where the animals themselves are raised cause a lot of pollution. However, developing countries are getting richer quickly, and the more wealth their people gain, the more meat they want to buy, because eating meat is a sign of status. Science may offer one solution to the problem. Already experiments are being done to use cells from cows to grow muscle tissue which might be suitable as a substitute for natural beef. Kenta You can't say an activity is voluntary if people are forced to do it. If you're doing something because it is a required part of the school curriculum rather than because you think it will benefit others, there is no point in doing it. It goes against the volunteer spirit. Maybe people nowadays see things differently, but at least originally the word "volunteer" actually meant something important. Hisao So, you think 32 everyone should start doing volunteer work in high school. Ⓒ many high school students ignore the importance of the volunteer spin ③the current high school curriculum already includes volunteer work there can be no such thing as forced volunteer work. Kenta Yes, exactly. Maki As Kenta says, it's true that an activity you are forced to do is not voluntary, but even so, I don't think it is necessarily pointless to take part in it. You might come to be interested in it and later decide to do it of your own free will. Then it will be a volunteer activity in the true sense of the word. We need to remember that one goal of high school is to introduce students to things they otherwise might know nothing about. Tetsuko So you're saying 33 0 forcing high school students to do volunteer work doesn't seem realistic having to do this kind of work can give you a good opportunity to learn what it is like 3 it matters little whether you enjoy doing volunteer work or not it's much too late for students to start doing volunteer work in high school

Date Maki Right. Hisao: I think I understand what Maki is saying, but I see a problem. It's probably useful for high school students to take part in these kinds of so-called volunteer activities, but it seems difficult to make time for them. I go to preparatory school three days a week, and play football on the local team on Saturdays and Sundays. If I have to do this extra work, too, I'll have to give up one or the other. Maki: But it won't be necessary to do it after school or on weekends. Since it will be included in the formal curriculum, it will be done during the regular school hours. Hisao: But revising the curriculum so that it will include this extra work, without extending school hours, will mean the time spent on traditional subjects such as English and mathematics will have to be reduced, and I can't think that will be beneficial to us students. Tetsuko I agree that 34 it's desirable to revise the current high school curriculum as soon as possible it's far better to do volunteer work on weekends Than after school on weekdays. the current work high school curriculum doesn't leave any room for excra ▷1回目第文・第3/2回目参照 volunteer work is even more important than traditional high school subjects ボランティア活動は高校に元からある科目と比べてもさらに重要だ。

例えばこの例文ならas a mother talksとto her childを副詞の()を分けてかたまりを作ると考えてました。
