誤文訂正問題です。
3の答えはknewなのですがhave knownだと間違っていますか？？knewの理由を教えてほしいです。

butの後ろがポイントです。
but they didn’t は本来 but they didn’t know です。しかし、but以前のJohn and Emily (know)〜ですでに同じ動詞が出ているので、わざわざ言う必要が無いので省略されています。このことから、butの後ろのknowと問題になっているknow は同じ時制だと判断できます！
