という部分があったのですが、
as〜awayの部分が、that they grew smaller and smaller にかかって修飾するというイメージで良いですか？

As they sailed farther and farther away(～するにつれて)が副詞節で、 they grew smaller and smaller(だんだん小さくなった)が主節になっています
