時制の一致とは？
文の主節（メインの文）が過去形のとき、従属節（that節や疑問詞節など）も時制を過去にそろえるルールです。
例
• He said that he was tired.（He said が過去 → was にそろえる）
時制の一致が適用される場合
① that節の中が「事実」や「状態」を表すとき
• She said that she liked music.
→ 「好きだった」と、過去の時点での状態
時制の一致が適用されない場合
② 普遍的な真理（いつでも変わらないこと）
• He said that the sun rises in the east.
→ 太陽が東から昇るのは今でも事実なので、現在形。
③ 話したとき以降の未来のこと（can / will など）
• She said that she would come.（＝過去の未来）
→ 時制一致で “will” → “would” に変える
でも 「so that S can～」は時制一致しないことが多いのです。
so that S can/will～が時制一致しない理由
「so that」は『～するために』という目的を表します。
• I studied hard so that I can pass the exam.（×とされることが多い）
• I studied hard so that I could pass the exam.（◎正しい）
なぜなら、
• 主節 I studiedが過去なので、
• 「目的としての未来」＝過去から見た未来 → could（＝過去のcan）を使うのが自然。
