Part1.1 We often see signs in public places or on streets. They are sometimes called "pictograms." Pictograms 64 are used not only in Japan but in other countries. They serve as a means of communication in daily life. In Japan such signs started to mushroom in the early 1960s. In 1964, many people from other countries visited Tokyo to see the Olympic Games. Signs helped foreign visitors find facilities easily. In the global world, many countries are trying to create common signs. For example, the sign of "Emergency Exit" above was proposed by Japan in 1980 and accepted as an international sign later.

Part1.2 Many signs send us messages each day. Some of the important signs are traffic signs. Let's take a E "Stop" sign as an example. Traffic signs are usually circles, squares or triangles, but a "Stop" sign has a special shape: it has eight sides. This octagonal : shape helps drivers recognize the important message of the sign from far away. The "Stop" sign made its debut in the U.S. in 1915, and today other countries keep using similar signs. Above, you can see a picture of a "Stop" sign in Canada. In fact, this type of octagonal sign was used in the early 1960s in Japan, too.

1.3.1 Signs seem to be easy to make, but there are at least three points to think about. First, we must consider forms. In traffic signs, a circle usually means "prohibition" or "mandatory action," a square implies "safety," and a triangles gives people a "warning." Second, we must think of symbols. An "x" (x) stands for "prohibition." "Prohibition' can also be shown by a slash (\). The use of this line probably comes from the letter "N" in the word "No." Finally, colors are important, too. Red is often associated with "danger,"" while green shows "safety. Yellow tells people to be careful, and blue implies "direction." Then what does the sign above say?
