Some say these early Palaeolithic humans, living between 2.5 million and 10,000 years ago, had just the right diet for modern living. ②The argument for the Palaeolithic diet is that the human body adapted to life during the Stone Age, and because it has changed very little since then, it would be better for us to ③follow the pre-agricultural huntergatherers' diet. (U5P2) Proponents of this diet advocate avoiding all dairy products and grain-based foods like pasta, bread or rice. They argue that modern disorders like heart disease, diabetes*2 and cancer have arisen primarily from ⑤the incompatibility between our modern diet and our prehistoric anatomy. It is argued that we should follow this diet (6) because our bodies, and especially our digestive*3 systems, have evolved based on it. Consuming dairy products or any agriculturally-based food is said to be challenging both evolution and our bodies. Evolutionary biologists argue otherwise. They say that because ⑦different genes change at different rates, we can't expect to be ⑧genetically identical to people living in the Stone Age. According to this argument, evolution hasn't occurred in this manner. In fact, humans have been constantly evolving. (U5P3) ⑩ Whether or not we are genetically identical to cave people, it is of course still possible that the Palaeolithic diet could be better for us. Few would argue that eating only Whighly processed foods is good, or that we wouldn't benefit from eating some more fruit and vegetables. Moreover, studies have shown that people do tend to lose weight faster on the Palaeolithic diet, even though they tend to follow it only for a few weeks. So, while there's no @hard and fast evidence yet that we should be eating like cave people, it is of course unhealthy to follow a diet that mainly consists of highly processed foods like white bread and sugary cereals. Yet this doesn't mean that all dairy roducts and grains should be avoided. When it comes to losing weight, the advice is which is probably why any diet ill @pretty dull eat less and exercise more aiming to have found an alternative seems appealing.
