昔は同じ町内に怖い大人が必ず何人かいて、 子供が人として恥ずかしいことをすると、
いつも本気になって説教してくれたものである。 そこには、 子供を地域社会全体で
育てるのだという強い意識が存在していたのだと思う。 そんな雰囲気のおかげで、
子供も自分は社会の一員であるという自覚を育んでいくことができたのだ。

In the past, we could find, in any community, a
few morally-strict adults who would severely
scold any child in the area who did something
shameful. It seems to me that there was a tacit
rule among the community members that they
must watch and discipline the children. In such
an atmosphere, the children developed a sense
of belonging to the community.
