In reading for self-improvement, you should cast a critical
eye on what the author says. Unfortunately, however, too many
readers read only at a literal level. Too many, without knowing
it, are slaves to other people's ideas. They tend to accept
5 whatever is in print as truth. The trouble with this is that such
people misread because they do not distinguish fact from opinion,
make inferences, or sense the author's bias or tone. Reading
critically means to be aware of these things as we read.
To read critically, you need to be aware of your own bias or
10 prejudice as well. We can be so biased about something that we

have heard someone repeat negative words, for instance, about
neighbors, politicians, other countries or the like, we tend to begin
to believe those words ourselves, without even checking whether
15 they are fact or mere opinion.
All of us have biases, even authors; so, as critical readers,
we must be careful not to let our biases interfere with our
comprehension. Similarly, we must be able to recognize an
author's bias so that we may not be influenced until we have
20 investigated the facts.
