tell 人 to ～(動詞)＝人に～するように/～しなさいと言う
tell 人 not to ～(動詞)＝人に～するな/～してはいけないと言う

このnotがneverに変わり、絶対に～してはいけないと言う、となっているのでneverを使うと思います。

My teacher told me never to give up.　これらはOK.

nothing toはおかしいと思います。
