Biomimetics
1 The field of biomimetics learns from natural systems To
work out problems, it tries to understand what nature does well.
It also tries to develop new technology. Although the word
biomimetics is new, for many years people have been looking to
nature for ideas to use when they develop various products.

2. For example, in the wild there are some plant seeds with
sharp points. You may get such seeds on your clothes when you
walk in the forest, and it is difficult to pull them off.
3 One day in 1941, George de Mestral, a Swiss engineer, came
home from a walk in the mountains. "He found burdock seeds
in his dog's fur. Then he took a close look He wanted to know
the reason why those seeds could stick so well. He found that
burdock seeds have small hooks on their sharp points. They

easily catch on hair or fur. This is how “touch fasteners" were
first thought of and invented.

4 Biomimetics is also used to solve environmental problems.
The 500 Series bullet trains have a unique design. There is a
reason for the shape of the long front nose. At first, the train
made a loud noise when it entered tunnels. Many people
called the company about the noise, so the designers worked
hard to reduce it.
5 One day, a designer was watching birds and had an idea.
It was to make the train's nose very long like a kingfisher's
beak. Kingfishers are very good at diving into the water and
catching fish. The shape of their beak makes it possible to
dive with little resistance from the water. In the same way,
the beak-like shape of the train reduces the air resistance that
makes noise. This new type of bullet train can now travel ten
percent faster and use 15 percent less electricity, and it makes
far less noise.

6 In Africa there is an air-conditioning system that uses very small
amounts of energy. Buildings with this ecological air-conditioning
system have well-designed chimneys and windows. When there
is wind, these chimneys and windows let out hot air from inside
the building. Also, the walls are made in different thicknesses to
take in heat during the day, which they let out in the evening.
7 This system copies the natural system of mounds made by
white ants. In Africa, the air temperature changes from about
10°C to 40°C, but the temperature inside the mounds always
stays around 30°C.
8 A shopping center in Zimbabwe is the best example of
such ecological buildings. This center is the country's largest
office and shopping center, but it has no conventional air-
conditioning. It stays at reasonable temperatures year-round
with far less energy and uses a design learned from the self-
cooling white ant mounds.

9 Today, more and more scientists are looking at nature to
get hints about new technology. Some scientists, for example,
are studying a kind of desert lizard. It drinks water little by
little through its feet and spikes. Scientists think it possible
to develop technologies for getting water in dry areas by
studying this lizard. Similarly, there are many natural objects
and living things that have inspired scientists to create the
technologies we use every day.
10 Let's take another look at nature. Nature has solved
various problems with different systems and designs. Living
things in nature have survived through hard times. Some
have survived millions of years because of their designs.
Nature is a good designer that has built up effective systems
without changing the environment. We should guard this
great source of ideas and learn more about it. How about
looking around for hints of new technology hidden around you?
