De Lesson 4 Gorillas and Humans (Part 1) Rapid Reading Worksheet Interviewer: Today, we have an interview with Professor Yamagiwa of Kyoto University, an expert on gorillas. Professor Yamagiwa, thank you very much for your time. Prof. Yamagiwa: My pleasure. Interviewer: I heard you spent many years with gorillas in Africa. Could you tell us about your interest in them? Prof. Yamagiwa: Well, although they have big bodies and scary faces, gorillas are similar to humans. For example, just as people do, they usually make eye contact with each other. They do this when they greet each other or when they want to invite others to play. They seem to keep good relationships through face-to-face Such a communication style is an communication instead of body contact. important base in human conversation, too. I think human languages developed from this style of communication. Interviewer: Very interesting. (Part 2) Interviewer: I didn't know gorillas use eye contact to keep good relationships. I always thought they were aggressive animals. I get scared when they beat their chests. Prof. Yamagiwa: That gesture is called "chest beating." When we see it, we usually think they are very violent. However, it doesn't always mean they are angry. Interviewer: Why do they beat their chests? Prof. Yamagiwa: They beat their chests when they want to catch others' attention, show excitement, or give warnings. When young gorillas are playing, they often beat their chests in turns. Human children shout at each other when they play. These two behaviors are similar. Gorillas also beat their chests when two groups of gorillas are approaching each other. When the two groups meet, trouble can happen. Each group warns the other about coming closer. (Part 3) Interviewer: So, it seems that gorillas are peaceful animals. Don't they fight with each other? Prof. Yamagiwa: Yes, they sometimes fight for food with others in their group. However, if two gorillas fight, other gorillas usually try to stop the fight from continuing. Interviewer: Who tries to stop it? Prof. Yamagiwa: Usually smaller gorillas such as females or younger ones do. Eye contact communication is also used in this case. They approach the two larger gorillas who are fighting. The smaller gorillas stare at the angry gorillas. The angry gorillas then move away from each other. Interviewer: Why do smaller gorillas play such a role? Prof. Yamagiwa: If other large gorillas use force to stop a fight, frustration remains CH F L F 1 A F F I E

and another fight may happen. On the other hand, smaller gorillas do not use force. As a result, the angry gorillas stop fighting and no frustration remains. We humans. often use force to control others. Some countries use great military and economic force to stop fights between countries. This method doesn't solve any problems. Interviewer: That may be a lesson we can learn from gorillas. (Part 4) Interviewer: For my last question, I would like to ask you about the present situation of gorillas. I heard their numbers have been decreasing. Prof. Yamagiwa: Yes. Gorillas are becoming extinct. About 120,000 gorillas lived in Africa ten years ago, but that number has become less than half in just ten years. Only 30,000 to 50,000 of them are living there now. This is related to the cellphones and computers we use. Interviewer: What do you mean? Prof. Yamagiwa: Africa is an important area for producing rare metals. These metals are used in our cellphones and computers. To collect them, people have been destroying the living areas of gorillas in the forest. In addition, hunting gorillas for their meat has been increasing. If we do not change this situation right now, our "relatives" may be extinct in 10 to 30 years. Interviewer: Then, each of us should understand this situation and consider what we can do. Thank you so much, Professor Yamagiwa. It was very interesting. Prof. Yamagiwa: Thank you. 下の英語長文のhowの部分の訳し方について質問です。(空欄→whatです) how their resolutions compare with the previous year's behavior.
