基本的な違いは以下の通りです。

現在形：①現在の状態　②現在の習慣的動作　③普遍の真理　を表します。
① Kate is a high school student.
② Kate goes to school from Monday to Friday.
③ The earth goes around the sun.

現在進行形：①今進行中の動作　②近い未来の予定　を表します。
① Kate is reading a book now.
② Kate is leaving for Osaka tomorrow.
