I think that way is more natural than saying

Only he wasn't there.

I went all the way to Tokyo to see the game but it was cancelled.

It implies you went far from your home for only one reason and you would not have gone if you knew you couldn't do the thing you wanted which was visit your friend.

Yes, it is possible, however, "all the way," implies that one action or purpose was more important and you may not have gone if you knew you couldn't do the important thing... at least on that day.
