I went all the way to my friend's house, but (unfortunately) he wasn't there.
I think that way is more natural than saying
Only he wasn't there.
All the way means It took time and energy to go somewhere.
I went all the way to Tokyo to see the game but it was cancelled.
It implies you went far from your home for only one reason and you would not have gone if you knew you couldn't do the thing you wanted which was visit your friend.
