文章の全体的な流れとしては
昔は果物野菜が豊富（食べるものが豊富）
雨量の不足により収穫できなくなる（食べるものがない）
食べ物を買うために木を切って炭にして売っている
木を切って炭にするのはこの文章で取り上げられている地域（ザンビア）を永久に変える（悪くする）
なぜなら森林伐採は気候変動をもたらすから
筆者は歌で森林再生の大切さを伝えている（わかりやすく言うと、森林伐採をやめさせたい）

マーカーを引いているbut以下の文章は抽象的に「森林伐採と炭焼きはtheir homeを変えてしまう。」（どのように変えるか、どうやって変えるかは明言していない）と言っているが、その次の文章でマーカー部分の説明（具体）として気候変動が起こることが書いてある。それはよくないこと（気候変動を防ぐと書いているので）ですよね。
つまり読んでいる時の解釈としては森林伐採と炭焼きは彼らの故郷に悪い変化を起こすという感じでいいと思います。
