これは、日本にいるアメリカ人の英語の先生によって書かれた短い随筆
である。
先日、私が自分の名前について英語で説明してくれたのんだ時、
何人かの生徒は私の名前に意味はなく良い音をもっているだけです。
私はよく日本人の名前に意味を持っているときいていたのでそれは私を
驚ろがせました。
しかし、何人かの生徒は私に名前についてのおもしろい話を説明
してくれました。たとえば、翔という名の生徒は私に「私の名前には
風がふき上がるように私が成功するという意味で漢字の翔という字が
その意味をもっています。
うららという名の他の生徒は春の光のように明るくて優しいという意味を
もつ“うららが”という日本語からきているとクラスに言いました。
西洋人にとって、日本人の名前のこの意味のそくめんは
名前における意味やイメージを表現する独特な方法なので
ときに魅力的である。

what to name their children. Some American names
do have a specific meaning or at least an image. For
example, the names "March," "April," "May," and
"June," which are all girls' names, come from the
months of spring and early summer, and they may
suggest beauty, hope, or the beginning of things.

is more common for parents to choose a name they
like. Sometimes they choose the name of a movie
character they like or a public figure they respect.
Names in the family are also popular; for instance,
naming a daughter after her grandmother, or a son

famous books is common, too. My friend was named
