What's in a Name? | Lesson 1 Part 1 This is a short essay about names written by an American teacher of English in Japan. G-1 1) The other day, when I asked my students to explain their first names in English in the class, 5 some of them said that their names had no meaning, but just had good sounds. This surprised me because I often hear Japanese people have meanings in their names. Some students, though, explained interesting stories about their names. For example, 10 a student whose name is Sho ( said to me, "My name means I will prosper, soaring on wings, because the Chinese character of Sho has that meaning." Another student whose name is Urara (555) said to the class that her name comes from the Japanese 15 word uraraka meaning "bright and gentle like spring sunlight." Some American names do have a specific meaning or at least an image. For example, the names "March," "April," "May," and "June," which are all girls' names, come from the months of spring and early summer, and they may suggest beauty, hope, or the beginning of things. 3) But these kinds of names are actually rare. It is more common for parents to choose a name they like. Sometimes they choose the name of a movie character they like or a public figure they respect. Names in the family are also popular; for instance, naming a daughter after her grandmother, or a son G-1 after a favorite uncle. Even naming a son after his GL1 father is a common practice. Using names from famous books is common, too. My friend was named "Beth" and her little sister "Meg" after the girls G-1 in the popular book Little Women. Names such as "Jacob" and "Michael" are from the Bible. 3. at least it takes you at least 15 minutes to get there. 12. for instance I like Japanese dishes, for instance, sushi and ramen. テストの解答にでていた英文和訳の訳が以下のようになっていました。 「for you の部分がeasyにかかるように、必ず「きみ（あなた）にとって」「きみ（あなた）には」としなさい」（テストの解説）。そう訳していない人（「～は」とか「～が」と訳した人）はみんなバツになりました。ちなみに日本語の辞書では「～にとって」「～には」というのは「～の立場からみると」「～の基準では」という意味だそうです。 なぜかなのか解説してください。 It is easy for you to read this book. 「この本を読むことはきみにとって（きみには）易しいことだ」 This book is easy for you to read. 「きみにとって（きみには）この本は読みやすい」
