Can sport change a country and its history? Wouldn't that be a miracle? As a matter of fact, Isuch a “miracle” occurred in Africa in the closing years of the twentieth century. In 1995, the 3rd Rugby World Cup was held lin South Africa. |While a lot of rugby fans thought that New Zealand's team, the All Blacks, |would win the trophy, |few thought that South Africa's own team, the Springboks, had any chance. |They had been away from international competition for many years. For most of the twentieth century, the white people of South Africa -just 20% of the population- ruled the country. To stay in power, they used a system known as apartheid, |based on discrimination lagainst black people. This attracted a lot of criticism from countries around the world, many of which tried to punish South Africa economically. |They also refused to let South Africa join international sports events. |Finally, Jafter many years of international pressure, the South African government decided to get rid of the apartheid system. |They released the black leader Nelson Mandela from prison land gave the vote to all adult citizens. A new South Africa was about to be born.

In the general election of 1994, Mandela's party, the African National Congress (ANC) won over 60% of the vote. The party formed a new government land chose Mandela las the first president of the new South Africa. As president, Mandela was looking forward to a big event -the Rugby World Cup. It was scheduled to be held |in South Africa the following year. However, The faced a major problem |-the national team, the Springboks, lacked support lamong the black population. Most of the blacks demanded that the team's name and uniform be changed, but Mandela disagreed. He thought that making such changes would not improve the situation. He knew |that it was a bad idea to shut out the whites. He also knew that the gap between the blacks and the whites lhad to be closed. His experience as a prisoner of the whites for 27 years gave him a great advantage. |when he spoke. |He later said that he understood the | of the black population. KangerT “They had grown up in an atmosphere |where they regarded sport las an arm of apartheid, |where we supported the foreign teams when they came to play against South Africa!", The continued. “Now, suddenly, I come out of jail land I'm saying we must.embrace these people!”

This attitude was typical of Mandela's generous way of thinking. This was shown again when the government changed. White officials were sure they would lose their jobs land be replaced by black officials. They even packed up their belongings land got ready to leave. But on his first morning at work, Mandela gathered them all and told them that he hoped they would stay! The white officials were astonished to hear this, but Mandela explained that he valued their knowledge and experience. His hope was that they would stay in their jobs land work together with the new black officials. Although they were free to leave, | most of them did stay and continue to work for the good of the new South Africa. As for rugby, Mandela had a similar attitude. He wanted the white players to continue playing for the country. He knew that was the best way for South Africa to excel in the World Cup. At the same time, he knew that the Springboks needed support. from black South Africans. He therefore encouraged the Springboks to visit towns and villages and teach black children about rugby. Gradually, ■s the World Cup approached, nore and more black people began to show support or the Springboks.

Englisn It was a nice surprise for the South Africans to see the Springboks end up lat the top of their group in the group round. In the next two rounds, leven more surprisingly, they overcame Western Samoa land the strong French team. This earned them a place in the final round. By that time, leven the blacks were calling the Springboks "our team." The final match -between the Springboks and the All Blacks was one of the greatest in rugby history. With nine points for each team lat the end of regular play, the game moved into extra time. Both teams poured every effort into the final minutes of the match, ladding three points eachi then, just before the end, |Joel Stransky scored a drop goal putting South Africa ahead. | Just six minutes later, the game finished, with no further score. The Springboks were the world champions! It was a great day for South Africa. Straight after the match, la reporter asked François Pienaar; the captain, |what it felt like to have 62,000 fans supporting his team. “We didn't have 62,000 fans behind us. We had 43 million South Africans!" he replied. He then went to collect the Rugby World Cup trophy from President Mandela, |who was himself wearing a Springboks uniform. It was a truly remarkable moment in sporting history, one that few blacks ever thought they would live to see.
