One of the worst parts of urban life, as the sociologists call it, is riding in
automatic elevators. The ride is all right. It is smooth and safe and free. But the
silence gets a person. There is something strange about being sealed in a small
room with a lot of other people without a word being spoken.
【全文訳】社会学者の言う都市生活の最も不快な面の1つは自動エレベーターに乗るこ
とである。乗ることそのものは問題ない。 円滑で安全でただである。しかし沈黙に
は閉口する。言葉が交わされることなくほかの多くの人と一緒に狭い部屋に閉じ込
められるのは何だか妙な感じだ。
