The は 必要です。 The は "この" という感じの意味を追加します。 An apple と The apple では、前者は「リンゴ1つ」後者は「(この・その・あの) リンゴ」という意味になることが分かるでしょうか。

The others の the は others が "sisters" であることを示すので必要です。
