■ 第3講 文化(3) アメリカの社会習慣 Date When you visit the United States, it is helpful to have a good understanding of American customs. (C) To those visitors who come from countries/where social relationships develop more slowly/during a longer period of time the American way may seem too personal and rude. However even in the United States, there are subjects that are avoided, as Americans themselves consider them too impolite. A great difference/between American social customs and (ウ) of other countries is the way in (エ)names are used. Most Americans do not want to be treated in any especially respectful way/ owing to their age or social rank;/ it makes them feel uncomfortable. Many Americans even find/he terms “Mr.” “Mrs.,” or “Miss" /too formal. People of all ages may prefer to be called by their first names. “Don't call me Mrs. Smith. Just call me Sally.” Using only first names/usually shows friendliness/and acceptance. 第4講 文化(4) イギリス英語とアメリカ英語 American and British people both speak English,/of course/but sometimes/it does not seem like the same language. In fact, there are some important differences/between British and American English. When an American says “farmer,” you can usually hear the “r.” But you can't hear the “r” in British English. Sound is not the only difference/between British and American English. The two languages have different words/for some things. For example, the words for *clothing áre different. Americans use the word “sweater," but the British say “jumper." Americans wear “vests” over their shirts, but in Britain they wear “vests" under their shirts. (C) These differences can be confusing/if you are learning English. But there is a reason/for the differences. Languages change over time. When the same language is used / in different places/it changes differently/in each place. This is what happened to English. It also happened to other languages, such as French. 下の英語長文のhowの部分の訳し方について質問です。(空欄→whatです) how their resolutions compare with the previous year's behavior. の部分を、「どのように彼らの決断は前年の行動と比較するのか」と訳したのですが、不自然になってしまいました。解答は、「どのように〜と"比較されるか"」となっていたのですが、なぜcompareが能動なのに、受動で訳されるのですか?(確かに、能動で訳すと上記の私がしてしまったような訳になってしまうので不適切だと思うのですが) 英語を読んでいて、もし能動で訳して変な場合は受動で訳しても良いということなのでしょうか? 教えていただけると助かります。
