( ::①::_:_:: ) are that these women will also be wearing nail art. They may have flowers matching their kimono patterns or eye-catching designs in the colors of their dresses painted on each fingernail. For many women, getting ready for a party means visiting a nail salon, as well as choosing an outfit, hairstyle, and make-up. dress:装っている、着こなしている fancy: 豪華な match:~と調和する ourfi:衣装一式 ①日本で結婚式に出ると、あなたは彩り鮮やかな着物や豪華なパーティードレスを着た若い女性を目にするでしょう ②たぶんこういった女性たちはネイルアートもしているでしょう。 <Chances are that ~>「おそらく~だろう」 ③Chances are that these women_will also be wearing nail art. を~している(してもらっている)」 ③ They may have flowers matching their kimono patterns or eye-catching designs in the colors of their dresses painted on each fingernail. (B) Nail artists create small paintings on people's nails. Nail art was born over five thousand years ago, when people in Arab countries started putting color on their hands and nails. The French have a natural-style manicure, which is from the 17th century. In this style, the nail is painted pink and the nail end is painted white, to show beautiful, healthy nails. French manicures are still popular today, but so are designs with pictures and small bright stones, and designs on long artificial nails called extensions. Nail artists today have changed simple French manicures into elegant ( ② ) of art. artificial

In Japan, most nail artists are women. That doesn't mean men can't enjoy nail art. In fact, more men are becoming interested in it. Nail artist Yoshi Ueda says, “In kimono design, there are different rules for men and women concerning colors and patterns. Women's styles might be better for special occasions. Men's styles might be more suitable for everyday use. Taking a hint from men's kimono design, I try to create simple, elegant nail art. Anyone can wear it in their daily lives. ‘Nail Art Biz' is my concept." It may take some time for nail art to become acceptable business wear. (④ )do you become a nail artist? With practice, most people can color their nails. For a career in nail art, professional training is necessary. Japan has a 3-level examination system for nail artists. Students must pass written tests about science and cosmetics, and demonstration tests showing their practical skills. There is also a ( ⑤ ) of nail art contests. Professional nail artists join these contests to keep their skills up and explore new design ideas. Japanese nail artists have shown many original designs and techniques in contests held in other countries. Professional nail artists suggest a university education. Nail artists create their art for other people. Besides painting designs, they need to communicate with their customers, advise them on design and health, and perhaps manage their own nail art salons. Universities have classes for communication, art, health management and business skills. Students can also learn these skills in their daily lives on campus. Meeting people, joining a club, taking good care of yourself, and being responsible for your school work build necessary skills, too. Date (A) (B) Perhaps one of the biggest changes [which has occurred since I came to Japan nearly twenty years agolis that many Japanese people now *take it for granted that most foreigners living in Japan can communicate in Japanese. When I first came, most Japanese people thought that it was practically impossible for any non-Japanese to conquer the language. People were very impressed if a foreigner *managed to stumble outa few words of greeting in the language, but few expected one to be able to do more than this. The thought [that foreigners could really understand Japanese, in the same way that they understood their own languages, seemed incomprehensible to most Japanese. This attitude itself, of course, tended to be self-confirming. As [ 1 ], nobody spoke to foreigners in Japanese This in turn made it very difficult for they either used English or avoided speaking to them at all. (C) foreigners who were studying Japanese to find people to practice with. As a result, it often took a long time for their Japanese to improve. Indeed, you can sometimes meet old foreigners [who have lived their entire lives in Japan without learning the language, although such people are increasingly rare.

(D) This attitude was especially puzzling to me because it was the precise opposite of the traditional attitude in England. When I was growing up in England, the country suffered a *labor shortage and this led to a wave of immigration from former colonies. People from India, Pakistan, Hong Kong, the West Indies and other places came to live and work in Britain. Nobody ever doubted for a moment that they, or the Europeans, such as Italians and Spaniards, who came to work in hotels and restaurants, could speak English. As was often said about the traditional Englishman, if a foreigner did not understand what an Englishman said, then he would simply repeat it more loudly. This arrogant attitude that[③] - was undoubtedly a *reflection of Britain's experience of having had both a great empire and enormous wealth and power in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. But, although the attitude was arrogant, it had the good effect that any foreigner who lived in Britain did very quickly learn to speak English. Moreover, it meant that native speakers of English became very accustomed to hearing their language spoken by foreigners in a great variety of accents and styles. Just as Japanese often laugh at foreigners' Japanese, so many people in England found foreigners' English amusing or sometimes charming. But now [ ④ ].

(空欄→whatです) how their resolutions compare with the previous year's behavior.
