多くのハリネズミが暑い地域に住むのに対し、寒い地方に住み冬眠をするのが特徴。
雑食性で、様々な無脊椎動物を食べるが、特にナメクジ、ミミズ、カブトムシやその他の昆虫を好む。
大きさは他のハリネズミより一回り大きく、体長20cm～30cm前後、針の長さ3cmほどになる。毛並みは、茶色が強いのが特徴。
